Internship policy
This page explains how the programme works, what it costs, and what we expect. It is written so you can make a decision without a sales pitch.
1. The three tracks
Paid Internship
You contribute from day one and Exon pays you. There is no training course in this track, so there is no course fee.
Assessment Phase
One month, on a real project, under supervision. No money moves in either direction. At the end there is a viva — a spoken review of what you did and what you learned. We then decide together whether to continue, and on which track.
Internship in parallel with training
You do the internship while learning AI from the fundamentals. This is the part people ask about most, so here is the full picture.
2. How the fee works on the training track
You earn an allowance for the work you do for Exon. That is real work, so it is real money.
Instead of paying that allowance to you and asking you to pay the institute separately, Exon pays it straight to the partner institute towards your course fee — and it covers the larger part of that fee.
If the allowance does not cover a monthly instalment, you pay the difference. For that difference, Exon introduces you to a cooperative bank that offers education loans at a low interest rate.
No loan money is ever paid to Exon. A loan exists only to cover a course fee, and it is between you and the bank.
Tool costs are separate from the course fee. Every engineer needs their own tools. As an enrolled student you pay a student rate for them, not the industry rate, and we explain this at the introductory session.
3. What we expect from an intern
- Write things down. In LDD, a decision that is not recorded did not happen. This is the one habit that matters most.
- Work in the open. Your plan, your journal and your decisions are visible to your supervisor at all times.
- Say when you are stuck, early rather than late.
- Own what you build. You will be asked to explain your own code in the viva. Code you cannot explain is not finished.
- Be honest about what you do not know. That is how the training plan gets useful.
4. What you can expect from us
- Real project work, not busy work.
- A named supervisor and regular review.
- Clear feedback, including when something is not good enough.
- No promises we cannot keep. We will not promise you a job, a salary or a placement, and you should be suspicious of anyone who does.
5. Attendance, conduct and confidentiality
- Attend what you commit to. If you cannot, tell your supervisor.
- Client and company information stays confidential.
- Plagiarism ends the internship. Using AI tools is fine — passing off work you cannot explain as your own is not.
6. How long we keep your data
An application that does not go further is kept only as long as we need to consider it and make contact. If you join us, your record is kept within the organisation for a maximum of four years — for example where you go on to a graduate programme. Full details are in the privacy notice.
